surfboard fishing 050711

Started off fishing from shore on a low tide.  Got there at around 730am and found someone was already fishing my hole.  Darn it!  That's okay, I made it south to a hidden reef and clambored out to a nice rip.  I spooked a school of Leopard Sharks, biggest one was about five feet.  It looked like a mother and her pups, about five of them.  She was teaching them to fish in about three to four feet of water.  They were so close.  The mother had faded colors, but the pups all looked very spectacular with a dark molted pattern.

I started trudging to South Reef and scared a good size halibut in about two feet of water and it zoomed off into a green water rip tide.  That was a fast fish but it was so close inside, it could have been visible from the shoreline.  I tried to fish for it, but it was long gone.  Once they get scared they typically will not bite for a while.

Saw a couple big shovelnose sharks, about ten round rays, but for me, I caught no fish.  Skunked.  I had worse luck on my board.  I paddled way outside, nothing!  I paddled way inside, nothing!  I sat in the break zone, nothing!  My buddy landed a good size Calico in the break zone, about a 15 incher, but me, nothing.

Small waves so it was fun fishing inside.  Never got knocked from my board, but darn, it was a cold south wind.

Sometimes getting nothing is the best thing.  Just being in the ocean and able to appreciate the beauty of life, without struggling for survival, is enough to keep me happy for the moment.  Then the real world sets back in.  Back to land.
